RPG Games with Female Main Character
To honor Women’s History Month, we compiled a list of science fiction and urban fantasy roleplaying games with female leads or strong female characters. These are just a few of our favorites.
We have a long history of strong female heroes
Strong female heroes have been part of humanity’s stories since the very beginning. Sif, Artemis, and Athena were goddesses wielding swords, bows, and axes as they passed judgement on foolish mortals.
Beginnings of Pop Culture
During the early 1900s, many of our pop culture icons were created. Wilma Deering was always there to save Buck. When sailing the seas, Belit was superior to Conan. The Lord of the Rings is about Galadriel’s final gambit against Sauron.
Modern Heroes
More recently, Buffy, Ripley, Murphy, Catti-brie, and Rain have shown us what true heroism looks like against overwhelming adversity. In many cases, these super stars were the primary hero with their own male (and female) sidekicks. These strong female characters were the ones that saved the day!
Common Traits for Female Heroes
Assertive adventurer. Penchant for trouble. Loyal. Independent. Brave. The heroes on our list of female main characters have these traits and more. We have seen Dale Arden portrayed as an agent in the US government. She is the muscle behind Flash’s bluff. Sergeant Karen keeps Chicago’s wizard humble and grounded. Harry and Ron would have been expelled multiple times without Hermione’s timely interventions. Their names may not always be on the cover, but our myths and legends would not be the same without our favorite female main characters.
And, our favorite female main characters aren’t always heroes! We have troublemakers, spies, and pirates. Boisterous, cantankerous, scrappy ladies whose luck and skills always get their prize.
